The label says “Contains Live and Active Cultures.” On the side of this container is printed “Best Before 17 April.” The yogurt’s lifespan is known, it is fixed, and it is non-negotiable. While biological expiration dates are, as a general category, unreliable, the same manufacturer that proudly declares the yogurt to be alive has also printed a date on the side telling you when it will be dead.
On the 18th, we look at the date, we look at the yogurt, and we throw it away.
